Jumbo Package: Kalen DeBoer cancels Seattle radio appearance

Your latest Crimson Tide news and notes.

Happy Friday, everyone. Or as happy as it can be, anyway, considering the news of the week. The Gym Tide celebrate Big Al’s birthday as they host 3rd-ranked Mizzou tonight, at 6pm on SEC Network. Men’s basketball heads to Starkville tomorrow night, where 5th ranked Tennessee went down on Wednesday. The women put a beatdown on Georgia in Athens last night, which is always a good thing.

If you’re looking for clues about the next coach, and I know you are, perhaps Nick Kelly has one.

This may mean nothing, or it may mean something. Alabama fans seem to be divided on DeBoer because he doesn’t have SEC ties, but every candidate is going to have warts because they are being compared to Saban. Only four active coaches have won a national title. Two of them were promoted into their jobs, one was pulled out of retirement, and the other is Jim Harbaugh.

Landing a dude who has a P5 conference title, national title game appearance and national coach of the year honor is something that only the very best programs could pull off. If DeBoer is the hire, it’s tough not to call that a great pull.

The problem, of course, is that nobody out there is going to be Nicholas Lou Saban. Blake Sims would prefer that we all shut up about the hire and watch this video.

They say you shouldn’t cry because it’s over but smile because it happened, or something.

The Athletic reported on how some of Alabama’s recruits reacted to the news.

“That’s why you sign with a school and not coaches. That can change at any moment,” Travis Roland, Mincey’s coach at Daytona Beach (Fla.) Mainlan

d, said Thursday.
