Jannik Sinner was certainly the big favourite for the win in the Montreal Masters 1000, where he defended the 1000 points won in Toronto last year (when he won the first Masters 1000 of his young career).

The world’number 1 had easily defeated Croatian Borna Coric and ATP ace Alejandro Tabilo in the first two rounds, not giving up even a set along his run. The 22-year-old Italian was beaten by Russian ace Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals, due to a performance well below expectations.

The Canadian Open was a great opportunity for Jannik to increase his advantage ATP ranking due to the absences of Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, who are remarrying after the Paris Olympics. The feeling is that the 2024 Australian Open champion is still not at the top of his game after the tonsillitis that forced him to skip the Games.
The Italian ace is not at his best
Sinner touched his hip and knee several times during the match against Rublev in Montreal and his physical condition is worrying. The young Italian seemed to have solved his physical problems in the last 9-10 months, but the injuries came back to condition him from spring onwards.

The world number 1 will use the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati to get back in shape for the US Open, which will take place in New York at the end of August. Jannik Sinner holds fewer points than Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic until the US Open, but he will need to be careful to avoid further injuries. The Spaniard defends the final in Ohio, while the Serbian – who should have defended the title in Cincinnati – will return to action directly at the US Open. Sinner – on the other hand – was eliminated in the second round last year by Serbian ace Dusan Lajovic.

After Montreal there will be Cincinnati and the American tournament has already been drawn. Jannik Sinner will be the number one seed and has on his side as main seed Alexander Zverev, Grigor Dimitrov and Andrey Rublev who faced in the night. The Italian ace could debut in Cincinnati against an old acquaintance as he waits for the second round winner between a qualified and the Dutch tennis player Tallon Griekspoor, opponent who has crossed several times this 2024.

Not easy the possible third round with Jannik who should on paper face the number 13 seeded Ugo Humbert while in the quarterback should draw one between Rublev and the American Taylor Fritz. Look out for the Frenchman Mpetshi Perricard, who has proven himself to be a tough sport with his service on fast surfaces.
In the upper part, Sinner’s main opponent is definitely Sascha Zverev, a tennis player who has already won on this surface and who will debut against the winner between Karen Khachanov and Francisco Cerundolo. In the semifinals, Sinner’s possible opponent should be Zverev but also watch out for Dimitrov or the Americans Korda and Shelton with the latter who will debut against the wild card Opelka. In the final, everyone is hoping for a possible final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, the current leaders – along with Novak Djokovic – of world tennis with Jannik dreaming of some revenge after the recent disappointments.

Sinner’s goal is the US Open
During the press conference after his match against Rublev, Sinner admitted he’s not at his best: “These things can happen. I didn’t start well, improved in the second set, and had it there in the third, but I wasted opportunities and then couldn’t react. He played well and deserved to win. It’s not something we are used to. When you’re tired, you can’t waste opportunities like I did at the beginning of the third set.”

He also added: “The confidence level changed a lot after that moment. It must be accepted and assumed that this is not a bad result for me coming from where I was. Andrey was better than me at crucial moments. Physically, I’m not bad. I believe defeats like today’s are more related to the mental aspect.
My body is not as agile as I would like due to the issue that prevented me from playing in Paris, but I haven’t been comfortable mentally either. I hope to be in shape again as soon as possible. I don’t expect miracles in the next five days. I assume I won’t be able to play at 100% in Cincinnati, but I do intend to arrive at my best for the US Open 2024, which is my main goal.”
