Iga Swiatek has given her verdict on Netflix’s decision to cancel their tennis documentary series Break Point. The Drive to Survive-style show was axed after just two seasons as it failed to live up to its other sporting counterparts. And Swiatek admitted that she decided not to take part in the second season after she and her team received “hate” for their appearance in the first.

One of the stars of the first season of Break Point has reacted after Netflix ceased production of the show. Swiatek featured in her own episode released in the middle of 2023, which followed her run to the US Open title the year before.
But she was noticeably absent from season two, and has now addressed why she quit as she tried to explain Netflix’s decision to cancel the show. “Well, honestly, I didn’t know about that. I don’t have any answer to that right now,” the four-time Major winner said after being informed of the news.
“I was involved only in season one, and I gotta say that it was kind of a test for me if I’m going to be comfortable talking about my life and, like, opening up so much. But, well, I think it was a great idea, but I think we have, you know, many different and complicated stories that it’s hard to, like, describe them in couple of episodes, you know.”

While Swiatek couldn’t understand why Break Point didn’t enjoy the same success as Netflix’s other sporting documentaries, she admitted that there were some downsides when she appeared in the first series. The world No 1 continued: “But on the other hand, like, in other sports it’s the same case.
“Honestly, it’s hard for me to compare why it didn’t work out in tennis but it did in golf and Formula 1. But I can only speak about my perspective. I think that the Netflix guys were really nice and really cooperative but in the end there wasn’t much impact we had in terms of editing some stuff we didn’t like.

“I know I didn’t give, like, much access, as much as other players. I accepted that I may not have the final voice, but there were some stuff that were, like, misinterpreted. My appearance in this series kind of caused some hate towards me and my team. So I just wanted to, you know, live my life peacefully and do my job, so that’s why I didn’t get into the second season.”

And there was another shortfall that Swiatek picked up on – the editing. Referencing an episode from season two which followed world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, she added: “I don’t know why it didn’t work out.
“Honestly, I don’t want to criticise or something, but I also saw some memes about editing and how, you know, Aryna, there was a match — I think here, the final, Aryna’s and Elena’s, she was serving on deuce and then Elena was returning from advantage side. And I think anybody who knows tennis is going to notice. Yeah, it’s a shame that it didn’t work out.”
While Formula One and golf enjoyed success with Drive to Survive and Full Swing, the tennis iteration failed to rack up anywhere near as much watch time. There was already some indication that things were going south when the second season was significantly shorter than the first, getting six episodes instead of 10.
