One of the outstanding issues for the Seattle Mariners was resolving JP Crawford’s contract issue, however, just prior to their first game of the 2022 MLB season, the team has signed the shortstop to a five-year contract.
The deal between Crawford and the Mariners is worth a total of $51 million, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Seattle to keep Crawford, Gold Glove in 2019
The 2019 Gold Glove winner is one of the best defensive shortstops in baseball, posting 3.1 fWAR in 2021 and batting .273/.338/.376 with 46 extra-base hits when appearing as the Mariners’ first bat, following his MLB debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2017 to arrive in Seattle in 2019.
“Seattle is a special place for me, and I can’t wait to be a part of the team that brings a championship here, this place is going to be nuts when we do it. We all saw that last year. I’ve said before that I’m here to win, and we’re going to win for a long time. Let’s ride,” Crawford said in a statement.
“J.P. brings excellent defense at a critical position, in addition to solid on-base skills and a penchant for delivering in the big moment, he’s an incredibly competitive player who has become an integral part of our team, both on the field and in the clubhouse,” Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said in a statement.
Mariners’ 2022 mission, return to the postseason
With the Crawford issue resolved, the Mariners can focus on doing what is necessary to return to the postseason, which they have not achieved since 2001, after adding reigning American League Cy Young winner Robbie Ray and slugger Jesse Winker as well as Eugenio Suarez to their roster.
