BREAKING: Fire Engulfs WLKY Station Building After Suspected Battery Explosion
Louisville, KY — May 13, 2025
A devastating fire broke out early Tuesday morning at the WLKY station building located at 160 WLKY Drive, sending plumes of black smoke into the sky and prompting a swift response from local fire crews.
Officials say the blaze began around 6:45 a.m. and may have been caused by a lithium-ion battery explosion in a broadcast equipment storage room. Witnesses reported hearing a loud “pop” followed by visible flames spreading rapidly through the east wing of the facility.
All staff inside the building were safely evacuated, and no injuries have been reported at this time. However, the building has sustained significant damage, particularly to the newsroom and master control areas.
Louisville Fire & Rescue is conducting a full investigation into the cause of the explosion. In the meantime, WLKY operations have temporarily shifted to a backup facility to continue news coverage.
