The Penrith Panthers have suffered a major setback ahead of their upcoming NRL fixture, as head coach Ivan Cleary confirmed that team captain Nathan Cleary will be unavailable after straining his ankle during a training session earlier this week.
Cleary, widely regarded as one of the best halfbacks in the game and a critical leader for the Panthers, sustained the injury during a routine contact drill at the Panthers’ training base in Penrith. Medical assessments revealed a moderate ankle strain, ruling him out of the Panthers’ next game and raising questions about his availability in the coming rounds.
Head coach Ivan Cleary, who is also Nathan’s father, addressed the media with concern:
“It’s obviously tough news for the team and for Nathan personally. His leadership and game management are vital to how we play, but we won’t rush his recovery.”
With Nathan sidelined, the Panthers will likely look to Jack Cole or Brad Schneider to step into the halfback role, while five-eighth Jarome Luai will shoulder more responsibility in game control and direction.
The timing of the injury is particularly challenging, as Penrith look to solidify their spot in the top four during a competitive mid-season stretch. Cleary’s absence will test the squad’s depth and adaptability, especially in high-pressure situations.
Despite the blow, coach Ivan Cleary remains confident:
“We’ve built a strong squad and culture over the years. This is an opportunity for others to step up and show what they can do.”
The Panthers are set to face a tough opponent this weekend, and all eyes will be on how the reigning premiers perform without their on-field general.
