Carlos Alcaraz became only the second male tennis player after Roger Federer in the Open Era to win the first four Grand Slam finals.
Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz has become the youngest male tennis player to complete a Channel Slam, breaking Swedish legend Bjorn Borg’s four-decade-old record.
Carlos Alcaraz defeated Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic on Sunday, July 14, in straight sets to defend his Wimbledon title. Last year, he ended the Serb’s 34-match unbeaten streak at the Centre Court in a five-set marathon.
Alcaraz also enjoyed a stellar campaign in Paris, where he defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev to win the 2024 French Open. With the win, he became the youngest male tennis player to complete a Surface Slam, breaking compatriot Rafael Nadal’s record.
However, with the latest triumph, he has become the youngest male post in the Open Era to complete a Channel Slam at the age of 21. The Channel Slam is a rare feat in tennis that is achieved by winning the French Open and Wimbledon in the same calendar year.
This feat is difficult to achieve as players have to go through a significant surface change in a short time. Several parts face different problems in shifting the surface from clay to grass. Before Alcaraz, the record was held by Swedish tennis legend Bjorn Borg, who completed his first Channel Slam in 1978. He completed two more Channel Slams in 1979 and 1980.
After Alcaraz and Borg, Rafael Nadal is the third youngest on the list. He completed his first Channel Slam in 2008 after he defeated Roger Federer in a historic final.
Alcaraz has also become only the sixth male player in the Open Era to complete a Channel Slam. The other five players to complete the triumph are Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. Additionally, he has already matched compatriot Rafael Nadal’s record of two Wi
mbledon titles.
