Top journalist ‘doubts’ Novak Djokovic’s knee injury during Olympics QF against Stefanos Tsitsipas was nothing but ‘acting’

Was the knee niggle Novak Djokovic suffered during his quarterfinal match in Paris against Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas nothing but acting from the Serb? This was what journalist Benoit Maylin claimed and criticized the Serb for it.
Djokovic secured a 6-3, 7-6(7-3) win over Tsitsipas and became the oldest singles player to reach the semifinals of the Olympics. He won the first match easily but Tsitsipas tried to shift the momentum by winning back-to-back games in the second set.
Djokovic winced in pain during that set and even called his physio twice. It was the same right leg he injured during the fourth round of the French Open which forced him to bow out of the quarterfinals. Without wasting any time, he underwent surgery and made the decision to feature in Wimbledon at the last moment. In spite of all this, Maylin feels the 37-year-old was faking the injury at the Olympics.
Doubts that he’s just acting? Yes! Tsitsipas is 4-0 down in the second set. As luck would have it… Tsitsipas is wondering: ‘What’s going on?’ And then he doesn’t put a ball in the court. It drives me crazy. Djokovic is in the semifinals for the fourth time in the Olympics. He’s never won one. He’s going to play Musetti, he’s the big favorite. Musetti is on fire. And all of a sudden, his knee hurts. Benoit Maylin said on the Winamax show “Sans Filet” (via We Love Tennis)
After improving his head-to-head record over Tsitsipas (12-2), Djokovic is set to play Lorenzo Musetti in the semifinals and leads 6-1 in their head-to-head meetings. The match will also be their fourth encounter this season, having met at the Monte-Carlo Masters, French Open, and Wimbledon.
Novak Djokovic concerned about his right knee before the semifinals
Novak Djokovic admitted that he felt a sense of deja vu when he suffered the injury scare at Court Philippe-Chatrier during the second set against Stefanos Tsitsipas. The 24-time Grand Slam champion, though he withdrew from the French Open quarterfinals, claimed that he will try everything to make another appearance at an Olympic semifinal so that he can take home a medal.
I’m honestly concerned, but I’m going to let the medical team evaluate the knee and do an examination. Novak Djokovic said after the match
Musetti, in the quarterfinals, knocked out Tokyo Games’ singles gold medalist Alexander Zverev in straight sets 7-5, 7-5 to set up the clash with Djokovic. The 22-year-old’s best performance at a Grand Slam event came this season when he reached the Wimbledon semifinal, which he lost to the Serb.

Watch: Tennis player controversially defaulted from his match
A competitive Mubadala Citi DC Open quarterfinal between Denis Shapovalov and Ben Shelton ended abruptly on Friday when Shapovalov defaulted during a second-set tiebreaker. Shelton won the first set 7-6 (7-5), leading 6-3 in the second-set tiebreaker when Shapovalov sent a backhand into the net. That prompted a frustrated reaction that quickly spiraled. Shapovalov slammed his racquet onto the court before turning the crowd. He began barking at a fan and again threw his racquet down. “He’s obviously said something to someone in the crowd,” commentator Brett Haber said. “Well, if you can read lips, you know it was colorful words exchanged,” co-commentator Steve Weissman said. Shapovalov’s action drew a rebuke from the umpire, who called a code violation for unsportsmanlike before an ATP supervisor was sent out onto the court. Immediately, Shapovalov protested. “What do you mean, he’s talking to me,” Shapovalov said. “I’m going to tell him off… Give me a code, but don’t call the supervisor.” Shelton also lobbied on behalf of Shapovalov, saying he heard the chirping coming from the crowd. Ultimately, the pleading fell on deaf ears as Shelton was awarded the match. “It’s unfortunate that a high-level match like that, such a great match that was highly contested, just an all-out war, ended like that,” Shelton said via The Washington Post. “You never want to see it.” With the win, Shelton moves on to the DC Open semifinals. Shapovalov, meanwhile, forfeits $53,420 and the 100 ATP rankings points he would have earned for losing outright.

Diamondbacks set MLB record with massive first inning against Pirates
Strengthening their winning streak to four games, the Arizona Diamondbacks set a new MLB record in the 1st inning of their victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday. Corbin Carroll led off the inning with a triple down the right-field gap, ultimately scoring on a fielding error, giving Arizona a 1-0 lead with a “little league home run.” The real home run parade then began. Ketel Marte launched a 440-foot bomb, followed by Joc Pederson, who hit a ball into the Allegheny River in right field. Finally, Josh Bell, on the first pitch he saw in a Diamondbacks uniform, made it three straight home runs, all hammered to right field. The combined 15 total bases by Carroll, Marte, Pederson, and Bell set a new major league record for the first four batters to start a game, according to @OptaStats. Later in the game, both Ketel Marte and Josh Bell hit another pair of home runs, helping Arizona regain the lead after trailing 7-6. This season, the Diamondbacks are second only to the Yankees in runs scored. They also rank in the top five in slugging percentage, OPS, and batting average. With his two home runs on Friday, Ketel Marte is now third in the National League, behind Shohei Ohtani and Marcell Ozuna. Over the past 30 days, the Diamondbacks lead all teams in runs, and rank third in hits, on-base percentage (OBP), and OPS. They also hold the best record in baseball during this span.

Rangers announce bad news about three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer
The Rangers announced that right-hander Max Scherzer has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder fatigue. Left-hander Walter Pennington was recalled in a corresponding move. It’s been a challenging season for Scherzer, who just celebrated his 40th birthday last week. He underwent back surgery in the offseason and initially hoped to return some time in the middle to the end of May, but then he was delayed by some nerve irritation in his thumb and didn’t make his season debut until June 23. He has since made eight starts for the club, but questions surrounding his health popped up recently. He lasted only two innings on July 20 and later told the media he was experiencing arm fatigue, with Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News among those to relay the message. He felt good enough to make his next start on July 25, tossing six innings against the White Sox. But on July 30, he lasted only four innings and 68 pitches against the Cardinals with manager Bruce Bochy relaying that arm fatigue was again present, per Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. All year long, it has seemed like the Rangers would have a rotation that would get gradually healthier over the course of the year. Scherzer was coming back from his back surgery, while Jacob deGrom and Tyler Mahle were lined up to join the mix in the second half of the season after recovering
