Breaking news: EVERTON forma coach was found dead early hours of today

The Blue half of Merseyside is still coming to terms with his death last Saturday, less than 48 hours after he had penned what proved to be his final column.

Today we have produced an article, again in Howard’s own words, taken from his autobiography Love Affairs & Marriage: My Life in Football, published in 2013.

So it’s over to the great man himself for the final word…

“Football had changed rapidly during the 1990s and not always for the better.

“The money in the game meant it was increasingly difficult even for big clubs like Everton to do much more than put a cup run together.

“The chances of building a team again like the class of 1985 was virtually non-existent.

“Because you know there is no way you can be as successful again, it dampens your enthusiasm for the game.

“If someone had offered me the time and money, it might have been different. But I didn’t see any club telling me, ‘You’ve got five years and ple

nty of money.’
