“I mean, I think I’ve tried with everybody,” said Huberdeau, showcasing the sort of self-deprecating humour that you don’t always expect from a star athlete. “So I had to go back to the first one. I did the full cycle.”

But in the not quite two weeks since Flames head coach Ryan Huska figured he’d give this another try, there have been legitimate signs of chemistry between Calgary’s two most talented and well-compensated forwards.

Although Huberdeau and Kadri are sitting 1-2 on the team scoring charts, many fans might have rolled their eyes when they were reunited in the late stages of a lopsided road loss in Pittsburgh, some likely screaming at their screens: ‘We already know this isn’t going to work!’

“I don’t really know what’s changed there,” Huska said prior to Thursday’s home date with the Tampa Bay Lightning. “But they do seem like they’re fitting really well together right now.

“We tried it really early on when they were first here, that first year, and then we haven’t gone back to it for a long period of time. So maybe it’s them getting to know each other a little bit in the dressing room, away from the rink, and they’ve found a little more chemistry that way. Maybe that has something to do with it.”
