took me out the Sunday before the race. I knew the next race in the series was in October, and I decided in the hospital bed that I would find a way to do it. I am sharing this for two reasons. First, to thank all of the people who supported me through this terrible time. I was driving the family minivan when a teenager drove across the divided highway and hit us nearly head on. Kaela and our 3 girls under 3 years old were all in the minivan. The girls were physically okay (thank God for car seats), but Kaela was also out of commission for 6 weeks with a back injury. It took a village, and our family was there for us. My parents and in-laws, plus aunts, uncles, and cousins all stepped up to help care for us and our kids. A special shout out to my big sisters—they dropped everything to care for me in ways that only they could. Liz Beutler immediately flew from Las Vegas to be with me in the hospital in Raleigh, ensuring I got the medical care I needed. This included literally negotiating with the doctors to keep me in the hospital when they wanted to discharge me after only a few days. Melissa Beutler Withy, with three month old twins, worked tirelessly for months to handle all legal and insurance matters that resulted from the accident. Their professional expertise combined with their love and concern were unspeakably invaluable. I am grateful for the many swim coaches who taught me how to do hard things—how to set goals and be persistent in my pursuit, pushing through the pain and monotony. They taught me how consistency in the little things I do every day can compound to bring incredible results. I can’t streamline yet—I still have a way to go to get back to 100% mobility in my right shoulder. But without my experience as an elite athlete, I don’t think I would have the mental strength to recover at this rate. (Thanks to Coaches Jim Bolster Gustavo Leal Dan Peterson Todd Etherington) I am also grateful to Jenny S., Janet Richards, and my team at Stripe who had my back and made sure this misfortune didn’t derail my career. They assured me my job was waiting for me, and they even sought to create additional opportunities when I got back to 100%. (Continued in thread
