Iga Swiatek says the WTA are doing something ‘scary’ which is getting more ‘crazy’ every year

Iga Swiatek is playing her first hard court tournament since the Miami Open last March.

The world number one is constantly expectant, challenging herself against relentlessly lofty standards she keeps setting herself.

The tears flowed when she settled for bronze at the Olympic Games in Paris 10 days ago.

Iga Swiatek is still getting used to being the favorite wherever she goes, yet virtually always delivers.

After her third consecutive triumph in Paris, the Pole moved to the grass, where she is still yet to find the same success she does on other surfaces.

Back to clay for Paris and now over to North America for the hard courts – exhausting.

The rapid surface changes and ruthless schedule is taking it out of those at the top who play up to 80 matches a year, with Ons Jabeur’s latest injury proof of these challenges.

Speaking ahead of the start of the Cincinnati Open, Swiatek outlined the difficulties of such a busy schedule.

“Our calendar is crazy, probably the toughest one in sports,” she told the Cincinnati Press. “There are sports that are really tough because, physically, you might get beat up. But most sports have four months off, sometimes even six.

“Our schedule is crazy, and it’s getting more crazy every year, which is scary. You just have to train wisely.”

Clearly identifying the risks of injury, Swiatek is fortunate to have managed to broadly stay fit and healthy so far in her career.

Can Iga Swiatek win the Cincinnati Open?

Last year’s run saw the Pole march to the semi-finals, before being beaten in a thrilling match with eventual winner Coco Gauff.

With her last hard court march of this year ending in a shock loss to Ekaterina Alexandrova, Swiatek hasn’t had the warm-up on the courts in Montr

eal as she did 12 months ago.
