Emma Raducanu has a new ranking after choosing to skip the Paris Olympics

The 2021 US Open Champion Emma Raducanu will be hoping to rediscover her form at Flushing Meadows in September.

With the conclusion of the tennis events at the Paris Olympics, all of the WTA Tour will reconvene on the American hard courts, with the US Open on the horizon.

Emma Raducanu was out for almost eight months after she recovered from surgery on both of her wrists and one of her ankles, but has since returned to the tour looking re-energised.

After securing her first win over a top 10 player by beating Jessica Pegula at Eastbourne, she put together a solid Wimbledon campaign by reaching the fourth round.

With the difficult switch back to the clay courts, Raducanu opted to skip the Olympics in Paris, to the bewilderment of Great Britain teammate Heather Watson, and flown over to the states to get ahead of the game on the hard courts.

Emma Raducanu receives ranking boost after a successful run in Washington

Entering Wimbledon as a wildcard, Raducanu was stuck way outside the top 100 despite her run to the semi-final of the Nottingham Open which moved her up 44 places in the WTA Rankings to 165th.

She has since backed up her promising grass court form at the Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington, narrowly losing in the quarter-finals to Paula Badosa, who is also looking to climb back up after an injury hampered year.

Leapfrogging compatriot Harriet Dart, she now sits in 70th and as a result becomes the British number two on the women’s side.

A decent set of results in Washington saw her come past Elise Mertens, who she beat at Wimbledon, and America’s Peyton Stearns, before losing out in a marathon three-setter in the last eight to Badosa.

Can Emma Raducanu make a run at the US Open?

Despite differing fan opinions on Raducanu after her mixed doubles snub of Andy Murray at Wimbledon, her 2021 run at the US Open was spellbinding.

The real question doesn’t really look to be about Raducanu’s ability to perform or handle pressure, rather the status of her injuries and fitness.

The 21-year-old’s aggressive baseline play and powerful serve suits the surface perfectly and with the women’s singles competition having seen five different winn

ers in the last five years.
