He couldn’t convince Dave Mustaine to also hire his brother Vinnie Paul, so Dimebag decided to carry on with Pantera instead, and, together with Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown, boy oh boy was it worth it.

Paul and Darrell Abbott were born in Arlington, Texas to the family of Jerry Abbott, a country musician, and producer.

Brothers Paul and Darrell Abbott developed their interests in music while growing up in Pantego, Texas, where their father owned a Pantego Sound Studio. The boys were encouraged to experiment with the recording equipment and with music in general, which would eventually lead to Paul’s influence as Pantera’s co-producer.

As Darrell recalled in Guitar World:

‘I can remember one birthday of mine where Dad said, ‘Son, you can either have a BMX bike or you can have this,’ and he pointed to a guitar. I ended up taking the bike, but he did plant a seed in my mind.’

After recording their first two albums at Abbott’s studio in Pantego, Texas, Pantera moved on to the new recording studio that Jerry Abbott opened in Nashville, Tennessee, for their third release.

Allegedly, the ‘Vulgar Display of Power’ cover face guy was whacked 31 times before the shot was secured.

The album’s cover was shot by photographer Brad Guice, who also shot the photo for the ‘Cowboys from Hell’ cover. The band told their label that they wanted ‘something vulgar, like a dude getting punched.’ The first version of the cover that the label brought to the band showed a boxer with a punching glove, but the band did not like it, so the label produced a second version. According to Vinnie Paul, the man on the cover was paid $10 a punch and was hit in the face 31 times to get the right picture. However, Brad Guice stated that the man, who was named Sean Cross, was never actually hit.

At the age of 14, Philip Anselmo burned a portion of his parents’ house down during a prank.
