It is now just one victory in 12 games for Palace, who hover five points above the Premier League relegation zone.

Hodgson’s short-term contract expires in June, but pressure continues to mount on the 76-year-old veteran.

He was pressed on his immediate future at Selhurst Park by talkSPORT’s chief football commentator Sam Matterface – and it led to a tense exchange between the pair.

“A manager always feels pressure,” Hodgson said. “I’m always surprised when I get asked the question. Isn’t that part of the job?

“The fact is that you know football teams want to win matches.

“Whether you’ve got reasons why it’s not happening or whether or not you’ve got a lot of things in your favour, the bottom line is that when the team is not winning and the supporters are unhappy and maybe the people in the in the board are unhappy too, the pressure and the scrutiny is going to land on the manager.

“That is my responsibility so I don’t think I should be surprised if you’re suggesting that scrutiny and that pressure is going on at this moment in time.

“You can’t be in football as long as I’ve been and then expect never to find yourself in this sort of situation.”

Hodgson continued: “I don’t say anything to them [those asking questions]. This is a decision that the club makes.

“So at the moment the club haven’t made that decision as far as I know, at least if they have they’ve not told me about it.

“I don’t say anything to the other people that you’re referring to.”

Hodgson was then asked whether he believes he is still the right man to take Palace forward.

“I think that that’s a question that really answers itself,” the manager responded.

“I’ve been in the game a long time, I think I still have qualities, I think our coaching staff has qualities. I think we’re working in the right way.

“So of course I think we’re the right people, but the fact is, it would be a bit surprising if I was to say to you, ‘I don’t think we are now, I think we’re hopeless, I think someone else should do it’.

“Is that what you’re asking or expecting me to say?”

Matterface then explained his line of questioning. The talkSPORT reporter said: “No, not expecting to say anything but I think it’s probably pertinent, especially in the circumstances, to have a discussion about it, because the

Crystal Palace fans will be asking that question.”
