Eight-time Olympic canoeing champion Birgit Fischer has ended her attempts to qualify for the London Games at the age of 50.

The German is suffering from inflammation of a heart muscle, and doctors have told her she will not be able to compete in the Olympics. Fischer told Die Welt newspaper that health is more important than any medal.

 

Doctors diagnosed her with an irregular heartbeat earlier this month, which kept her out of the German trials, making Fischer’s last Games in Athens in 2004.
