
Tadej Pogacar’s dream of winning a third Tour de France looks over for another year after the Slovenian unravelled on Wednesday. Stage 17 was billed as Pogacar’s improbable rescue mission; instead, he leaked time on the gruelling Col de la Loze as Jonas Vingegaard all but wrapped up the yellow jersey. Pogacar is now 7’35” back on Vingegaard with four stages remaining.

The Slovenian eventually came home almost six minutes down on Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) in the yellow jersey, leaving him 7’35” adrift on his rival in the general classification with four stages remaining.

Vingegaard had not even gone on the attack when Pogacar dropped off the pace with 7km remaining of the climb as Jumbo-Visma drove a strong pace on the front through Sepp Kuss, with the steepest gradients still
to come.
