Dr. Tony Evans, renowned pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship and founder of The Urban Alternative, died Saturday evening after a powerful tornado struck the town of Ashville Springs. He was 74.
Evans was in town to preach at a regional revival event attended by hundreds. As the EF4 tornado approached, emergency sirens sounded and attendees began to evacuate the Ashville Springs Civic Center. Witnesses say Evans stayed behind to help direct people to shelter.
“He was guiding the elderly, praying over people, and encouraging everyone to stay calm,” said Michael Grant, a volunteer at the event. “He wouldn’t leave until everyone was safe.”
A sudden shockwave from the storm caused the building’s front entrance to collapse. Evans was reportedly helping a group into a side hallway when the structure gave way. Paramedics reached the scene within minutes, but he had already succumbed to injuries caused by falling debris and severe trauma.
News of Evans’ death has prompted an outpouring of grief from faith leaders, churches, and believers around the world. Known for his clear biblical teaching, compassion for the hurting, and emphasis on living under God’s kingdom rule, Evans influenced generations of Christians through sermons, radio, books, and conferences.
He was the first African American to publish a full-Bible commentary and study Bible, and he spent over four decades serving his Dallas-based congregation and global ministry.
He is survived by his children—Chrystal, Priscilla, Anthony Jr., and Jonathan—and numerous grandchildren. His wife, Lois Evans, preceded him in death in 2019.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon. The Evans family has requested prayers and privacy as they grieve the loss of a father, grandfather, and spiritual leader who lived—and died—serving others.
