In a tragic and unexpected turn of events, internationally respected Christian author and pastor John Bevere has died following a violent tornado that tore through the town of Ashville Springs late Saturday evening. He was 65.
Bevere, best known for his influential books such as The Bait of Satan and Driven by Eternity was in Ashville Springs to speak at a regional leaders’ summit hosted by local churches. The event had drawn hundreds of attendees eager to hear his message on spiritual authority and enduring faith.
According to eyewitnesses, Bevere was assisting others into shelter at the New Hope Worship Center when the EF4 tornado suddenly changed course and struck the building with catastrophic force. A portion of the structure collapsed under the pressure, and Bevere was caught near the entrance at the time of impact.
“He wasn’t thinking of himself,” said Lydia Rowe, an event volunteer who was with him moments before the collapse. “He kept saying, ‘Help them get inside, stay calm, trust God.’ That’s who he was—even in the face of chaos.”
Paramedics arrived within minutes, but despite emergency efforts, Bevere was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained from the collapse and resulting shock. Authorities confirmed that no foul play was involved.
The Christian community has responded with an outpouring of grief and tributes. Messages from leaders around the world, including pastors, authors, and worship leaders, have flooded social media, describing Bevere as a “spiritual giant,” “bold voice of truth,” and “servant leader to the end.”
He is survived by his wife Lisa Bevere, their four sons, and a global ministry that continues to shape the faith and convictions of millions.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
