Jannik Sinner arrived in Montreal yesterday and held his first practice session on the hard court of the Canadian Masters 1000. The World number 1 has recently resumed training due to tonsillitis that forced him to skip the Paris Olympics.
Many Italian fans have attacked the Australian Open 2024 champion, who also missed the Tokyo Olympics three years ago. The young Italian was expecting better results at the French Open and Wimbledon, but a health problem has slowed him down in the last month and a half.

Jannik was infected with a virus the day before his match against Russian Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon Championships, a problem that has weakened him and not allowed him to express himself at his best against the Russian on the iconic Centre Court.
Sinner will have to defend a lot of points in the second part of the season and wants to get 100% to the most important tournaments. In Montreal, the Italian will have to defend the 1000 points he won last year in Toronto, when he won the first Masters 1000 of his young career.
The Italian will be the big favorite in Canada, having the chance to train more than the players who are playing the Paris Olympics. ATP legend Novak Djokovic has already announced that he will miss the Montreal Masters 1000 and also the presence of Carlos Alcaraz is at great risk. The Spaniard is playing single and double in Paris and has confessed to having a small problem with his thigh.
Bassetti defends Sinner
Several fans have accused Jannik Sinner of voluntarily skipping the Paris Olympics to focus on the American tournaments. For some people tonsillitis is almost nothing but the reality is quite different. The director of infectious diseases at the Hospital of Genoa Matteo Bassetti commented on the physical status of the Italian ace and explained: “Tonsillitis is an acute disease that then resolves. It lasts about 10 days and with the therapies it heals. It is normal that Sinner has already improved and started training again”.
The doctor then clarified why it was absolutely not recommended to go on the field and why Sinner had to announce the package: “Playing with a tonsillitis in progress would not be easy at all, it becomes difficult even to breathe, not to mention the fever. Of course I’m not his doctor but I am convinced that tonsillitis was absolutely no excuse for not participating in the Olympic Games in Paris”.

Now Sinner is working and the goal is to improve the condition in view of Montreal, tournament where he defends the title and thus also defends the leadership in the ATP ranking. The 22-year-old Italian has done some great things this year, winning four titles and winning his first Grand Slam title in Melbourne earlier this year.
Jannik has already arrived in Canada
Sinner has repeatedly proved to be the biggest rival of Carlos Alcaraz, with whom he played some memorable matches. The Spaniard ace has expressed his admiration for the Italian many times: “Being there with Jannik at 22 and 21 at the top of the rankings and winning Grand Slams is good for tennis to have new faces winning big things and competing in major tournaments. I am very happy to have him there. We have a great rivalry as young players emerging in the fight for these things. It’s great for the sport, for tennis, and for the players as well.”
Despite their young age, Sinner and Alcaraz already showed that they were far ahead of the other players of their generation. During a recent interview with L’Equipe, former ATP ace Marc Rosset paid tribute to Jannik and Carlitos: “Afterwards, behind Sinner, I find that there is an abysmal void, with players who are too stereotypical. Alcaraz is today the only one who really does lots of different things, and I tell myself that he and Sinner could have a boulevard ahead of them. If the others do not ask themselves very quickly the right questions about what to add to their game, we should not then come and say: ‘We were unlucky, we fell at the same time as them.’”
