The life of Stoke-on-Trent darts icon Phil Taylor as he announces retirement

Stoke-on-Trent’s Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor is widely regarded as the greatest darts player of all time. Phil, from Burslem – who has just announced his retirement from competitive darts at the age of 63 – is the most successful player in the history of the sport having taken the title of world darts champion SIXTEEN times.

 

Phil says he is going to compete for another 12 months – with his finale being the World Masters in Sunderland next November.

 

Philip Douglas Taylor went from a factory worker to a world champion in the sport he loved. He was born and raised in Burslem and was one of three children born to Doug Taylor and his wife, Liz Taylor. His brother Christopher and sister Liz were his constant companions as he grew up in this close-knit community.

After leaving school at the age of 16, Taylor worked in a factory making ceramics and would work from 7.30am until 4pm seven days a week and in his spare time, he would weld cars together. As if that wasn’t enough the Stokie worked in a local pub on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, earning £22

in wages.
