Belgian cycling powerhouse Wout van Aert has set his sights on the breakaway as the Tour de France enters Stage 6, a hilly profile that suits the aggressive all-rounder. Speaking ahead of the stage start, Van Aert confirmed his intent to attack, saying, “I hope to go for it today and tomorrow. These stages are perfect for a breakaway, and I’m feeling good.”
Van Aert, riding for Visma–Lease a Bike, has yet to make a major impact in this year’s Tour, but the rolling terrain from Mâcon to Dijon provides a golden opportunity for a rider of his caliber. With punchy climbs, fast descents, and unpredictable crosswinds, Stage 6 is unlikely to favor the pure sprinters or general classification contenders—making it prime territory for a successful escape.
“This is what I love—racing aggressively, reading the race, and taking my chances,” Van Aert added. “The team is supporting me in this strategy, so we’ll see how it unfolds.”
After missing key moments earlier in the race and carrying the weight of high expectations, Van Aert is eager to turn things around. The Belgian star is known for his versatility—capable of winning mountain stages, time trials, and bunch sprints—and fans are eager to see him back at the front.
His teammate, Jonas Vingegaard, remains focused on the general classification, and Van Aert’s aggressive racing could also serve a strategic role in helping Visma–Lease a Bike control the stage dynamic or force rival teams into early efforts.
If Van Aert manages to get into the breakaway and stay clear, it could mark his first stage win in the 2025 edition of the Tour and a strong statement of form. With multiple medium-mountain stages ahead, Van Aert’s double attack plan—“today and tomorrow”—could set the tone for the rest of his Tour.
