Pastor Hagee continues to serve as the founder and Senior Pastor of Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas, a non-denominational evangelical church with more than 22,000 active members. He has been in the ministry for over 65 years, dedicating his life to spreading the gospel and supporting various humanitarian causes.

 

Throughout his extensive career, Pastor Hagee has faced numerous challenges and controversies. In 1966, he founded Trinity Church in San Antonio. However, in 1975, he admitted to immorality, leading to his divorce from his first wife, Martha Downing, and his resignation from the church. This period was undoubtedly a difficult chapter in his life, but he persevered and continued his ministry.

 

In 1975, Pastor Hagee founded The Church at Castle Hills, which later became Cornerstone Church. Under his leadership, the church adopted Pentecostal beliefs, including biblical literalism, speaking in tongues, divine healing, the prosperity gospel, and absolute opposition to abortion. The church experienced significant growth, becoming a prominent congregation in the region.

 

Pastor Hagee has also been involved in political activism. In 1968, he endorsed Democrat George Wallace in his presidential bid, and in 1996, he spoke on behalf of Republican presidential primary candidate Alan Keyes. In 2008, he endorsed Senator John McCain but later faced backlash over comments perceived as anti-Catholic and antisemitic, leading McCain to distance himself from the endorsement. Despite these controversies, Pastor Hagee has remained steadfast in his beliefs and commitments.

 

In 2006, Pastor Hagee founded Christians United for Israel (CUFI), a Christian-Zionist organization that has grown to become the largest pro-Israel group in the United States, with over 10 million members. His unwavering support for Israel has been a cornerstone of his ministry, reflecting his interpretation of biblical mandates.

 

Throughout his ministry, Pastor Hagee has faced health challenges. In 2008, he underwent open-heart surgery, and in 2020, at the age of 80, he tested positive for COVID-19. Despite these health scares, he has continued his pastoral duties and leadership roles.
