The Gers have been blowing away teams throughout the summer but Rovers provided their toughest test yet, holding a strong Steven Gerrard side to a 1-1 draw.

The home team had most of the possession and territory in the match but couldn’t kill off their visitors after Jermain Defoe’s opening goal, with Lewis Travis equalising in the second half.

Former Celtic boss Mowbray was left impressed by the identity and intensity of his opponents, even comparing them to Gerrard’s former club Liverpool.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “We played Liverpool this time last season and they play the same 4-3-3 formation.

“They press high from the front, they drop their midfielders deep and try and overload you. They suck you on top of them then play through.

“As I said they are a well coached team and you can see they are going to be a force this season.”

Gerrard has visibly improved the Rangers team since arriving last summer.

Although last term again ended with no trophies to show for their progress, there’s a reason why Gers supporters are optimistic heading into the new season.

There’s a zip and confidence to their play that marks them out as a team who will compete well in most games and it’s no surprise to hear Mowbray point that out, even with his past Celtic affiliations.

With new signings like Joe Aribo and Sheyi Ojo adding energy and fresh ideas to their forward play, they have also recruited well this summer.

There are absolutely no guarantees Rangers will find the consistency in results they need to challenge for major honours, but Gerrard has at least given them a better shot than any manager that has walked through th

e door in near a decade.
