Unai Emery makes John McGinn point after Villa horror tackle vs Tottenham
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has backed captain John McGinn to bounce back in their Europa Conference League clash with Ajax on Thursday, despite his red card in the recent Premier League defeat to Tottenham which keeps him out against West Ham United this weekend.
McGinn is set to play in the second-leg tie at Villa Park, which is currently 0-0, even after being sent off for a reckless challenge on Destiny Udogie during Sunday’s match, which saw Villa lose 4-0 to Spurs. Emery is excited to have McGinn back on the pitch, saying: “Tomorrow we can play with John McGinn, which is fantastic to use him and his quality and his power and his moment as a player and his spirit.”
McGinn is able to play as his suspension does not carry over into the UEFA competition. However, Ezri Konsa and Nicola Zaniolo won’t be playing due to suspensions. Despite managing a draw in Amsterdam last week, Villa were outplayed by Ajax, who are having a tough time in the Eredivisie.
Emery admitted that his team didn’t show they were favourites for the tie, saying: “To be favourites in Europe cannot help you, the only way we can show we are favourites is by playing and we didn’t show that.
“They showed us that they want to get something in this competition and they want to beat us. Playing the first leg, we got very good information off them.
“Europe is prestige, a UEFA competition, it is another objective in our season, it’s very important for the players and the club. I don’t want to finish my way in Europe with Aston Villa this year just yet.”
