Analyst Says 49ers Must Deal With “Life After” George Kittle
The San Francisco 49ers need depth at tight end, but eventually, George Kittle’s future may take precedence.
That was covered by Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area the day after the 49ers were unsuccessful in signing restricted free agent tight end Brock Wright. Wright was signed by the Detroit Lions to a three-year, $12 million contract in exchange for a matching agreement.
They need to start preparing, maybe for life beyond George Kittle,” Maiocco stated on Thursday’s episode of “49ers Talk.” “I realize that seems strange to say, but he seems to be so young and only recently made his NFL debut. Yet he’s thirty years old.
Kittle was selected in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft and has played seven seasons for the 49ers, making five Pro Bowl appearances and four All-Pro accolades. Over his career, he has 460 receptions for 6,274 yards and 37 touchdowns.
Kittle’s contract with the 49ers is worth $75 million over five years, and it expires in 2025. Kittle, the highest-paid tight end in the league, will be 32 years old in 2026, so he may be able to negotiate a bigger contract again.
