Marc Marquez’s shoulder injury should have prevented him winning a fifth MotoGP world championship this year, according to the doctor who operated on him.

The Spaniard had been carrying the injury during the closing months of the season in which he sealed the title but exacerbated it in the final weekend in Valencia.

Dr. Xavier Mir, who was one of the doctors who worked on fixing the MotoGP champion’s shoulder dislocations, said his Tuesday surgery was “more complicated than expected” due to the level of join damage.

“I almost do not understand how he was able to win the world title like that,” Dr. Mir told Marca. “It gives him more merit.”

Dr. Mir explained that Marquez’s humerus bone, which links the shoulder to the elbow, was able to pop out “in all directions” with additional work being needed to repair the ligaments as well as the bones.

“One hundred per cent success is not guaranteed by anyone, but after the operation, even with him asleep, we did a stability test, moving the shoulder in all directions and it did not dislocate,” he added.

Marc Marquez should not have been fit enough to finish the season.

“That is a good sign because, when he is awake, the muscles will hold the bone in place more.”

Marquez is in a race against time to be fit for the Sepang shakedown from February 6th in what will be the opening test of the 2019 season.
