To sign the $70 million pass rusher back to the team, the Broncos traded him to an NFC contender.
Contrary to numerous reports on October 4, the Denver Broncos were not planning to give Randy Gregory the pass rusher contract.
The Broncos are moving Gregory to the San Francisco 49ers, per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.
Denver is giving the 49ers Gregory and a 2024 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2024 sixth-round selection, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
According to Schefter, the 49ers will pay the veteran minimum this year, and the Broncos will pay approximately $10 million for the remainder of 2023 because Gregory does have a hefty contract.
Gregory’s current contract includes three years of guaranteed money, which end after this season.
George Paton, the general manager of the Broncos, was well-known for his ability to spot talent and his unique approach to managing rosters at the back end of the NFL when he was appointed in 2021. However, it hasn’t always been the case. Along with Gregory, he also failed to secure the services of experienced free agents Ronald Darby, Kyle Fuller, and Mike Boone in 2021. As of right now, none are listed.
Teddy Bridgewater, an experienced quarterback, was signed by him the day before the 2021 draft to oppose Drew Lock. Neither quarterback is on the current roster, and that experiment lasted only one season.
