Tensions continue between Julien Alaphilippe and Patrick Lefevere. While the Quick Step team boss had already recently criticized the Frenchman following his very disappointing 2022 season, he added another layer during a face-to-face discussion with the former world champion, as reported by Sporza.
“His wife and his manager were there. I told him I was not happy at all. I understand his illnesses and his falls, but you can’t keep hiding behind that,” Lefevere said. “That was the cold truth. Last year he won twice, the years before that three and four times. I didn’t take him on the team for that.”
Asked about his relationship with the Belgian manager in the columns of L’Équipe last week, Alaphilippe had nevertheless assured that he had never said anything like that to his face. “Every time I had discussions with him, it went well. He never said things like that to my face. To be honest, I was a little surprised to read that. If he had the slightest problem with me, I think he would have spoken to me about it first. So, well… I don’t car
e at all.”
