Rob Gronkowski noncommittal on returning in 2018

A few hours before tonight’s Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles, NFL news website Pro Football Talk tweeted the following about Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski:

This is 99-percent wild guess but it would not shock me at all if Gronk retires after tonight’s game.

Of course, as stated in the tweet, this is all pure speculation. Nevertheless, New England’s tight end was asked whether or not reports about potential retirement were accurate immediately after his team’s 41-33 loss against Philadelphia. His answers did not say a lot about his intent. What they also did not say, was definitively whether or not he would return next season:

I don’t know. I mean, I’m definitely going to look at my future, for sure. Sit down the next couple of weeks and see where I’m at.

Gronkowski is not saying anything surprising and basically just giving a standard answer a few minutes after losing the Super Bowl. Asked in two, three months the 28-year old could sound a lot different.

Of course, there is a realistic chance that Gronkowski is thinking about hanging up the cleats – especially if his body is giving him indications in that direction. However, if judged by the 2017 season and his contract structure, there is little reason to believe that he ultimately will not return in 2018.
